stories along the way: THE BARN BUILDER
“This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry!’” ~Luke 12:18-19
God calls this barn builder in Jesus’ parable a “fool,” an Old Testament term that describes a person who acts without God. This man is blessed with great wealth, but he uses his resources in a way that displeases God. He hoards his wealth for himself, with no thought or plan for helping others. And he seems to be unaware of any accountability to God.
Building barns continues to be a growth industry for us. Some of us are servants of the Lord, some of us are slaves to career or possessions or lifestyles, and some of us are serving several masters. But we all have a tendency to build bigger barns.
Please read Luke 12:13-21 this week. Then join us at 10:15 this Sunday morning April 26, Senior Sunday, as we consider together Jesus’ perspective on the disciple’s use of wealth.
